Baseball and My Childhood | A Lifelong Love

It’s not surprising that baseball joy was an integral part of my childhood. Because, it is a constant presence that shaped many of my happiest memories. Also, baseball was more than just something to watch or play, it was woven into the fabric of my life.

Family Ties and Weekend Ballparks

Every summer, I found myself captivated by the energy and passion that baseball inspired as I watched my brother and cousins on the field. We were at the ballpark almost every weekend, and the sights, sounds, and rhythms of the game became a comforting backdrop to my childhood. I was their biggest fan—and the biggest fan of the teams they played for—cheering them on with all my heart. When my brother and cousins won a tournament for travel ball, I would even get a ring because I was such a dedicated fan.

Playing Baseball Despite My Disability

But my connection to baseball didn’t stop at the sidelines. I played baseball myself until I was about 13, despite having a disability. The game gave me a sense of belonging and joy that I’ll never forget. Surprisingly, the coaches were always there to support and help me hold the bat and cheering me on as I ran around the bases in my walker. These moments on the field were some of the most empowering of my life.

There’s something about baseball that perfectly captures the essence of youth. Who doesn’t love the spirit of playfulness, the moments of pure joy, and the way it brings people together.
